I am teaching a class this semester about the chaos that was the 1960's in the United States. My students will be discussing everything from Camelot to the Civil Rights movement. I am looking to have my students read the novel "The Help" and to bring into sharper focus the socioeconomic climate of the 1960's and what led to the fight for equality and Civil Rights.
My students come from a relatively sheltered climate where they have minimal to no exposure to diversity. I feel these sorts of novels bring into their conscientiousness what realities exist outside their rural roots.
