Having a carpet with visible squares/spaces will promote more teacher teaching time and more student learning time. A new carpet will reduce the time that is currently spent on redirecting student behavior when they are sitting on the carpet. With our current solid-colored carpet that is held intact with duct tape, students are constantly wiggling/crawling around, competing over who sits next to whom, and worst of all, playing with the tape. Our carpet, sadly, is the reason for our prominent carpet time interruptions. As a first-year teacher, it was my goal to purchase the carpet when I started off the year, but unfortunately, classroom library books and miscellaneous supplies took precedence over my budget.
