I teach English in Richmond Public Schools. Many of my students are below grade level readers. As a result, reading is not something that excites or interests many of them. Additionally, the district has adopted a curriculum with some required anchor texts that are uninteresting to my students, making their dislike of reading even more profound. After previewing some novels in class, the majority voted on "The Hate You Give" as something they would want to read. I am trying to keep my students reading in an attempt to boost interest in literature, increase reading levels, and give them some ownership of their learning.
