In Math I, we discover, solve, and compare linear, exponential and quadratic functions. Using the calculator helps students to concentrate on how these functions work. The students don't have to worry about getting caught up in their computation but can focus on the function itself. We apply the functions to real world situations. These calculators help the students see low high a building is, when will a rocket hit the ground, how much does the bacteria grow or decay. These are just a few examples of how these graphing calculators aid in my math classroom.
Some students I teach are not able to afford these graphing calculators. I have some of these calculators but not enough for each student to have. It's important that each student have an opportunity to have one of these calculators in their hands as we work through these functions.I want every student to have the same opportunity. I want them to know I value them. Having these calculators will provide equity in my classroom.
