I would like to provide my students with enriching learning experiences through the use of a Makerspace. A Makerspace is a collaborative space where my students will come together to design, create, and build items of their own creation through inquiry-based learning. I believe that adding books geared toward engineering and STEAM will spark my students to continue this love and engagement with building. Also, by adding more materials, such as K’Nex and Legos, my students will be able to build in new ways and work with materials that they have not yet been able to use.
Our Makerspace will be a space where students can create, problem solve, and develop skills, talents, thinking, and mental rigor. It is not only a space where learning occurs through creation but an area where I want to show my students that successful people all learn through their mistakes and errors. I have already been able to incorporate the growth mindset into my classroom and now I have been able to show my students this applies in our engineering challenges as well. I have been able to show my students that with a growth mindset, they can get smarter through hard work, the use of effective strategies, and help from others when needed. More materials would allow my students to continue working on this vital way of thinking.
My goal as an educator is to help my students grow as problem solvers. Makerspace materials will strengthen their creativity through building and engineering challenges. It is a space to build core skills: dexterity, thinking, problem solving, following step-by-step instructions, group dynamics, patience, endurance, and the ability to try new things.
