A new set of TI-15 calculators would greatly enhance my students with disabilities knowledge and applications of math in 4th and 5th grade curricula. These calculators help our students understand abstract concepts such as adding and subtracting fractions, simplifying fractions, and rounding decimals to various place values.
For the last school year, 100% of my students with disabilities who had the accommodation of a calculator for the Math SOL, passed their test. This is incredible. Often times students with disabilities struggle to achieve similarly to their peers on the end of year SOL test. In this case, every single one of them passed. I have no doubts that future students with disabilities can achieve similarly to our students of last year, but first they only need the equitable opportunity to do so.
