"What the educator does in teaching is make it possible for the students to become themselves." - Paulo Freire
Each one of us learns in a unique way and finds comfort in different things. My goal in creating flexible seating options in our classroom is to allow for student choice. The ability to choose is extremely powerful and empowering, especially at the elementary level when the foundation for and love of learning is being set. Flexible seating will also lend to greater collaboration and discourse among peers.
The flexible seats that have been chosen will be used to bring students together and further create a sense of a collaborative learning community. Students will have the ability to choose a "smart seat" for them where they feel relaxed, can focus, can openly communicate and gain a new perspective. Currently, we have "flexible seating" and the students choose their "smart seat" for the day but this is done minimally. Students currently sit on the floor, lay on the floor, or move to a different desk.
My goal is to show my class how valued their commitment to their learning is. My 22 students are truly one of the kindest groups I have ever had the pleasure to teach and I would like them to feel that their kindness is rewarded. Please help me to enhance my students ability to choose a "smart seat" and enhance their learning!
