My first-graders are inspirational. As attendees of a Title I school in Arizona, most of them belong to families that struggle to provide day-to-day necessities for their children; oftentimes, the only meals my students receive are the ones they consume at school. Despite their unrelenting hardships, my students are compassionate, loving, talented, and capable. My students are in the ELL program and, as English Language Learners, are in need of intense, focused language instruction for several hours a day. I have discovered, since the start of the school year, that this group is incredibly talented and are capable of stretching beyond the resources I have to offer. Academically, they could be achieving much more and being much more challenged, but the current curriculum offers them very little room to excel past the predetermined expectations.
