My project is centered around my students who come in full of energy and do not know what to do with it! I want materials they can move around and they can have their hands on. I have a very old set of Versatiles I purchased at the Salvation Army and my students love to see them come out of the cabinet. Versatiles sustain their attention for long periods of time and appeal to all levels of learners.
This past week my struggling math students used the versatiles with a tailored made lesson from a template to go with our 4th grade math standards on fractions. They worked the entire time, 40 minutes, without hardly looking up. After each problem worked, they would grab a numbered tile and move it to the letter space to match the problem with the answer. They were determined to finish it so they could flip the case and check for accuracy.
The high time on task will benefit not only the students in my classroom, but the entire school. We are working on raising our performance due to low achievement school wide. Supplies are scarce and out of date at our newly built facility. Any materials I receive will be used in the most beneficial way for all students.
