Help my students envision possible futures through a literary climate change lens. A class set of Parable of the Sower will expose current and future students to one of the most important works of literature to tackle the crisis of climate change from a realistic, humanistic and scientific perspective. Parable of the Sower is the story of how a young woman of color uses the climate change-inflicted crises of her world as an inspiration for creating a social movement based on scientific knowledge of the natural world, inclusivity and the acceptance of change as an inevitable and motivating force for human survival.
As part of a unit on climate futures, students will read about and create their own stories about future scenarios of how climate change will impact society. I hope to help my students deeply analyze how current action can affect the future, and envision what their roles can be in addressing this crisis now and into the future.
