Representation matters! Creating a diverse classroom library is essential for my students to see themselves reflected in literature. A multicultural library will allow students to engage in personal connections to text and the world around them. These connections will support the inclusive environment of our classroom that strives to represent the dreams and challenges of our diverse ELL students.
Multicultural texts that represent our students will give them a voice and a feeling of pride and acceptance. Books about topics that relate to students will enable us to dig into difficult topics surrounding race, immigration, refugee status, and identity. Our texts will be used for small group discussion, literature circles, anchor texts, inspiration for personal essays, and as read alouds to welcome new students. This multicultural library will promote a safe environment in which to share their experiences and address the issues closest to their hearts, all while building understanding with one another.
