Students with disabilities will sometimes exhibit inappropriate or maladaptive behaviors when they become over or under-stimulated. They may not know how to use their words to express their feelings and instead they show us with their behaviors.
When our student's sensory needs are met, then they are able to return their focus and attention on the academic tasks. The small sensory supports will allow students to remain in the designated location in order to maintain attention to the task at hand. The large sensory supports will allow students to take the movement break their body requires in order to return to the previous task. The fine motor supports will encourage and motivate students to perform the more challenging tasks that typically result in behaviors due to frustration. The materials we need, help students to meet their sensory needs in appropriate ways, while encouraging them to communicate their wants and needs.
