As a first year teacher, I am struggling to build my classroom library. Motivated by the diverse group of students I teach, it is my desire to fill my shelves with books that any and all of my students can relate to.
I believe that it is the stories they read that will empower them, encourage them, and prove to them they are seen and valued. Therefore, it is vital that the books I recommend to them are pieces of literature that are accessible and current.
I want my bookshelves to be filled with texts that range from graphic novels for the reluctant readers to book series for the bibliophiles.
I have seen how these young adult texts have impacted my students' lives and I want to continue to be able to connect with them through stories that matter to them.
