My students live in a diverse culture where they see and often stereotype others based on appearance. Ignorance of other cultures and often creates uncomfortable situations in and out of the classroom. Students' exposure to other cultures in the books they read, will allow them to develop a sense of awareness through book club discussions. All students should be given the opportunity to relate and share their culture with classmates; books help to create a school culture of empathy and understanding. Book clubs give students the opportunity to experience the life of diverse characters' family and social cultures and discuss the differences in a structured environment.
