Although we have listed this project reaching 46 students, in reality it will reach many, many more. These books would become part of the first grade classroom library for years to come. That could possibly be 10 years of 46 students! That could be 460, or more, students!
These books and magazines would be used in whole group, small group and individual instructional lessons. I can imagine first graders getting lost in a great science book that would expand on their interests.
The magazines, in particular, include current research and time sensitive information. The students would be so excited to get each month's issue and make connections within their world. We have been promoting a kindness campaign throughout our school and city. The kindness books would be great discussion starters. Our school counselor has been reading some of these books during her visits to our classroom. It would be wonderful for the students to revisit these stories and friendship concepts. First grade is one of the foundation years for building empathy, gratitude and mindfulness that helps support kindness!
