My students will use their apple pencil daily to complete their chemistry work and projects on their iPads. They currently have a keyboard but find it cumbersome and awkward to use. I have periodically borrowed an apple pencil set from a math teacher and found my students excited about using them and finding new things they can do with them.
I believe that writing is the key to learning - not typing. In this digital world, students are rarely asked to write. Our school district has subscribed to Canvas (an online Learning Management Platform) and has asked the teachers to go paperless. I have embraced this new tool and have put all my classroom materials on Canvas, do all my labs and assignments on Canvas, do all my projects through the canvas and do all my quizzes on Canvas. The only time my students do not use their iPads to complete an assignment is when they have a test (although they still use their iPads to access their notes and other resources they can use on their tests)
Apple pencils are game-changers. The days that I have the apple pencils I see an increase in student production and involvement. On those days I also see that the issue of competing with cell phones is almost nonexistent. The students ask me regularly to get the apple pencils for them to use.
