All of our students want to learn to play the xylophones as soon as they catch a glimpse of them. For a class of 27+, I only have 2 "working xylophones. Even though these instruments "work", they are held together with tape and have needed other severe modifications. Other xylophones have missing bars and were used at this school when I attended here 15 years ago. They are very old instruments, very few, and barely playable. These instruments would help my students to become sensitive listeners and considerate participants as they play together in an ensemble. In my classroom, the Orff process will engage student's minds and bodies through a mixture of singing, dancing, acting and the use of percussion instruments. My lessons with these instruments are presented with an element of play, which helps the children learn at their own level of understanding. We use these instruments to teach various musical concepts such as rhythm, pitch, tone color, and melodic direction and become accompaniment for storytelling and movement. If funded, students would be able to experiment and explore new ideas and sounds and will allow for a classroom sense of unity with music through movement, dance, and speech.
