We want to grow a garden! Start to finish, we need to haul away old soil, mend the fence, and be ready to grow our vegetables, harvest and serve them in our school cafeteria and we're asking for the tools to do it! My goal as a language teacher is to bring my students real-life, engaging uses for the English language. I try to find concepts and experiences that create a spark in their eye and a need to communicate, to research, to share idea and to collaborate. This year, I was looking for an opportunity to share a large, long-range experience with students close to the classrooms so we would not need busing, and was granted the chance to rebuild our school garden which has not been functional in nearly a decade.
All of my students K-5 will participate in planning, planting, tending, harvesting, and eating the vegetables we grow in the garden. We will be using all domains of language (reading, writing, listening, and speaking), learning a real life skill and broadening our eating horizons, following recipes, and sharing our harvest with others. We cannot wait to get started.
