The novel “The Great Gilly Hopkins” seems to really hit home since our students live in a low socio-economic area combined with the high rate of drug use. Unfortunately, many of our students come from broken homes. Some of our students will be able to relate to the main character while others will be able to empathize with her. By using realistic fiction novels in our language arts classes, it will create more interest with the students. It is our goal as teachers to create life long readers and to peak our students interest to learn about their surrounding world and different hardships that people endure.
