One of the projects that my classroom completed was to figure out the amount of Expo markers that our school of 1,232 students went through in a year. The students worked collaboratively to figure out how to solve this mathematical problem. Four groups came up with different methods and presented their thinking to the class. This stimulated math talk, problem solving, and critical thinking as groups compared their strategies. An estimate of 7, 392 markers would end up in a landfill in just one year alone.
eWriters would allow students to continue problem solving on a board to share their thinking and strategies in a fun and engaging way. We typically use white boards during small and whole group to practice math strategies, mapping our thinking, brainstorming activities, and much more. eWriters provide a surface for students to continue this work without adding waste to landfills.
