These books will be used by my students in book club activities. Book clubs help students build a culture of reading amongst their peers. Reading and discussing these books gives an entry point into important conversations that we will have in class about identity, race, and culture in the world around us.
These books will function as mirrors, that they can see their reflections in, and windows, that allow them to learn about people that are different than them. Students need to read about characters that look like them and validate their experiences. Reading good books also builds empathy and understanding for people that are different than them.
