I am working to implement flexible seating in my fourth grade classroom. There has been lots of research regarding the benefits to flexible seating for elementary students. The research shows an increase in student empowerment, collaboration, and focus. Students feel empowered when they have the ability to control their environment. Flexible seating will allow students the ability to choose a seat that best supports their learning style and group setting. With the ability to change seats comes the ability to sit with many different peers throughout the day. Students will have the ability to maximize collaboration, sharing and hearing from multiple peers. We all recall the days of sitting at our desks for hours on end without movement. This pandemic has reminded us about the need for students to have active seating choices. Wobble stools and balance balls allow students the chance to move while learning. This slight movement increases student comfort, allows for the release of energy, and helps with focus. I have already began allowing minimal flexible seating options in my classroom and have seen a big difference in learning and classroom community.
