Immediate informal assessments are always key and essential in a lesson, especially in Math.
The use of whiteboards was almost a daily activity in my prior classroom, especially in math. The students also used whiteboards to pair up during vocabulary and spelling review and we saw an increase in retention and test scores. I saw first hand the impact of the use of whiteboards had on student performance, confidence and participation.
Using the workshop model in math, students come to the rug with whiteboards for guided practice and to record modeled strategies. The whiteboards allow me to see exactly what they are doing, as well as provide an easy place for them to show and share their work. I am able to walk around the classroom while teaching a lesson and determine if I need to stay on a topic and add additional examples or move on to the next topic without leaving any students behind.
By donating to our project, you not only help me effectively assess students on the spot but you are helping them increase their confidence and participation. Ultimately it increases their academic achievement.
