All students love to learn while being engaged. In our classroom, we like to connect reading to real world and real life. One of our favorite parts of our day is our Shared Reading Time. We use this time to practice our reading and phonics skills, integrated with Science and Social Studies Big Books.
Imagine students gathered on a big rug beside their friends in front of a nonfiction big book with amazing photographs. This is our idea of Shared Reading Time. We read together, we read with buddies, we follow along with our friends as they read, and we even get to use cool special pointers.
The only drawback is these big books can get pricey for a teacher's budget. We would love to have more big books that relate directly to our Science and Social Studies standards. This would help our Shared Reading Time be even more engaging for the students.
