These plush animal reading buddies correspond to the Zoo Phonics program I use to help students learn their letters and sounds. Each animal represents a letter of the alphabet. They will help my English Language Learners to identify animal names and animals they may be unfamiliar with, and they will help motivate my students to read on their own. I plan to use them in my Guided Reading groups. After we've read a book a couple times together, they will be able to choose an animal buddy and read the book by themselves to the animal. I also plan to use them as an option when they are done with independent work, in order to motivate them to finish work quickly. When they are done with work, they will be able to read to an animal buddy. In addition, there are a number of other activities I can use them for such as what begins with "d" like dog? or "f" like fish, or which animal starts with the same sound as "pig"?
