To empower my students, I would love to incorporate flexible seating in my classroom. These seating options will give students the opporunities to participate in their own learning in a manner that is most comfortable to them. Rather that sitting at their own desk, students will be able to choose the best place to become innovative learners.
Studies show that when students are in a preferred seat choice during instruction time, they learn more effectively. In my classroom, students enjoy standing up, sitting on the floor, and moving. During one of my math lessons at the beginning of the year, one student in the classroom had trouble focusing. When the class was reminded that they could stand or move during the lesson, the student who had trouble staying engaged began to stand up and was one of the most engaged students in the class!
