Giving students an opportunity to create with hands-on materials is incredibly important. I think this will be a great chance for students to build with some of these STEM materials - as a self-start, as a fast-finisher, and as a way to allow students to take a brain break and become grounded when they feel overwhelmed. Students need an opportunity to create with hands-on materials that allow them to use their imagination. This is especially important as these first graders are adjusting to full-day learning and adjusting to the rigorous schedule of first grade.
