These books will help my students learn about different ethnicities and cultures. One way to teach children is through stories, and these stories will provide a gateway into great conversation. For example, after reading the book In My Family we can discuss how we each have different people in our family with different names we call them and different roles in our life. Most of my students are made up of one race, so seeing a different race in a story could lead into conversations about differences, kindness, compassion and perseverance. Also, equally as important, is seeing their own ethnicity portrayed in stories and many of these books will do just that.
