Research shows that students are more motivated and gain a deeper understanding of content that is taught through games. I have seen this first-hand within the last two years of my teaching experience when I began slowly incorporating math games to supplement my lessons. My goal for this year is to include even more opportunities for hands-on game-based learning within all subject areas.
With so many unknowns in the current state of education, I believe it will be more important than ever to create engaging ways for students to interact with content material. The school closures we faced this year will undeniably lead to a decrease in the educational gains students achieve this school year and it will be our job as educators to pick up the pieces next year. To do this, we will need to provide a high level of differentiation to meet students where they are at and help them progress at a rapid pace. This will not be able to happen if we continue with educational norms that are outdated and monotonous for students. We must motivate and captivate them with new and exciting ways of learning!
I plan to use the basic materials on this list to create leveled content specific board games that are printed and laminated for durability so they can continue to impact my students' education throughout the entire year. Setting up a system such as this requires a lot of paper, lamination, and work in the beginning, but will pay off for months to come!
