By helping me be part of this cohort, not only will you give me access on how to teach and engage my students better, but you will give my students access to instructional materials to perform these labs and deepen their knowledge of the physical world around them!
My favorite thing about teaching 8th graders is that I get to see the transformation from middle schoolers into high schoolers. In a world where the media is increasingly misrepresenting truths and facts, I want to teach my students how to rely on evidence to make conclusions and to sort through data to build an understanding of the world around them. This program will help me engage students more deeply in science by helping them build the understanding of scientific principles from the ground up, learning as scientists learn, by doing experiments and making conclusions.
Research from Change the Equation found students in high needs schools are “much less likely than their peers in wealthier schools to experience hands-on activities in science. More than half miss out on these critical opportunities.” These lower-income schools also lack equal exposure to technology, lab equipment and materials in science and math. And according to the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering, “Underrepresented minorities are particularity underrepresented in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).”
This program puts students in the driver’s seat to discover information and explore scientific principles. Learning is driven by data and discovery and their ideas are then compared to scientists giving them the chance to see that they can make the same discoveries as Isaac Newton! I’m excited to see student’s empowered and thinking like scientists.
