Play is a critical part of a child's learning and development. Children need the opportunity to explore various sensory materials and manipulatives using their hands and fingers to learn about so many concepts such as size, shape, texture and weight. Manipulating various fine motor and sensory materials helps children develop the building blocks for fine motor development. These skills include grasp, eye-hand coordination, dexterity, isolated finger movements, fine muscle strength, bilateral motor coordination and hand strength. Play using sensory materials (such as tactile medias) and the use of fidgets are also calming and organizing activities for many children with autism. These materials will allow me to model fine motor activities and sensory play as well as educate parents about ways they can do similar activities with items they already have in their home. Once school is allowed to re-open, I am looking forward to sharing these materials directly with my students. I can't wait to see their faces filled with excitement when exploring these new and motivating materials.
