Our students are eager to learn and LOVE reading! My smile brightens even more, as they ask about coming to the library throughout the school day, and when they excitedly tell me about the books they are reading and/or want to read. However, in order for them to become avid lovers and readers of books, they must first learn basic reading skills such as phonemic awareness, phonics, and sight word recognition, just to name a few.
When students report to the library, they do more than simply "check out books." They are working in small groups on activities that will help them become critical thinkers, as well as improve their reading, writing, and speaking skills.
As I work with students, either one-on-one or small groups, it is crucial that they see examples, use manipulatives, write, touch, and show me that they understand a concept/skill. Having a reading and writing center cart that includes teaching manipulatives, magnetic letters, and storage for markers, paper, etc. will allow me to maximize teaching and learning. Although I primarily work with students in grades PreK-2 on basic reading/writing skills, there are students in the upper grades (grades 3-5) that benefit as well.
