Novel studies are the anchor of our English classes. We use them to teach all the state standards (reading, writing, speaking, etc.), so student engagement is a critical factor. The Hunger Games fits the bill. There's a strong female protagonist and a lot of action, so it appeals to all students. There are a ton of lessons and activities that tie in to the book. One of our teachers has even proposed doing a Hunger Games themed field day (non-violent, of course). We will also connect the book to the real world by reading nonfiction articles related to events in the book.
JK Rowling once said, "If you don't like to read, you haven't found the right book." By donating these books, you will be providing my students with the opportunity to disengage from their phones and discover how amazing reading can be.
