My students need more diverse books! Given the recent events in the United States, I’ve began looking at myself as an educator and the ways that I could be doing better for my students. I have spent the last few days researching books that promote conversations about race, different cultures, being inclusive, and the triumphs and struggles for people of color.
My students deserve the opportunity to learn more about themselves and their peers through diverse books. Children can learn so much through books. They have the ability to see themselves in characters and the struggles they're facing.
Having the ability to put more diverse books into my students' hands will lead to more open conversations about inequality. As a kindergarten teacher, I feel that it is my responsibility to promote these conversations for my young learners.
