This rug will not only be used for our morning meetings to gather and greet one another; this space will be used each time we enter our classroom to gather and settle our bodies. As a class, we will spend a lot of time on our rug. We will work in groups at the rug and see demonstrations. We will use the rug as a space to view lessons and to listen to books that are read aloud. We will gather at the rug to play games and to share ideas. This rug will be a safe space for our class to come together, discuss our dreams, and ask questions. This rug will not only serve this year’s students but many students in the years to come.
Additionally, I chose this specific rug because I believe it will meet the needs of each of my students. The rug provides a sense of community as we gather together but the individual squares provided a space that is just theirs. I have had many students in my years as a educational assistant that need "their" space when we come together and I have found that providing this is essential to create a safe environment. Furthermore, the rug has letters that wrap around the outside providing a clear space to sit when we gather in a circle. Since the rug provides designated spaces for both types of regularly used seating arrangements I believe it will be the best choice for our classroom. This rug will receive a lot of use and love from both myself and my students every single day; it is truly essential to the classroom environment I hope to create.
