Graphic novels help reluctant readers get engaged and involved in classroom discussions. My goal is to give students options to develop a true love of reading while also having a classroom set of Monster to discuss important things like racial inequity, justice, and coming of age.
Together, we will use Monster to inspire a desire to change the world and research into how to do it. My hope is that as we analyze the character of Steve Harmon, students will empathize with him and see that our justice system is not perfect. From there, we will move to the internet to research ways in which we can enact change now and in the future.
