As a teacher, it is important to model my own learning process. I have come to learn that it is important to have more representation of races and ethnicities in my classroom. I can do this through the books that my students read! It is my goal to procure a classroom library with books that more of my students can relate to and learn from. This includes books with characters that look like my students, books that help students to better understand cultures that are different from their own, and books that are written by a more diverse set of authors. I plan to use these books in class read-alouds, where we can discuss issues of race and inequality. I hope to use these books to foster a greater sense of community within my classroom, my school, and the greater community.
