Living in a suburban community, our students have limited experiences. They would benefit from diverse books written by authors with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. These books will allow our students to dive deeply into the characters' lives, to analyze critically, and to have great discussions about their thoughts and different perspectives they are encountering through their characters' lives. As these third graders grow up in a global world, they need to read and wonder about the struggles and successes of others. They need to read to understand choices and consequences. By getting to know these diverse characters in this series format, students will build stamina and gain new perspectives. That way they can become stronger citizens and foster their acceptance of others. In light of the importance of promoting global citizenship, it is increasingly important for educators to provide opportunities for our students to gain multiple perspectives on the world we live in. As we begin this new school year following emergency remote learning, a challenge we have is rebuilding our reading workshop format and increasing engagement and stamina after a lengthy time away from the brick and mortar school experience. These resources will help us meet both of these goals.
