My students love to play instruments in class. They love to create rhythmic patterns, accompany a song, and improvise. Ukuleles provide students a hands-on opportunity to learn numerous songs through whole group instruction or write their own individual songs. My students are enthusiastic and work with a new purpose when learning how to play instruments. I have seen this firsthand with my fourth grade students learning the recorder. I have watched my students become better sight-readers through singing solfege and then playing those melodies using our Orff instruments.
As a community of musicians, we are able to address how to have a positive mindset, increase time management skills, set up a weekly practice schedule, and overcome nerves when playing in front of others. I see so much musical growth and emotional growth in my musicians when they play together; it's wonderful!
