This project is designed to assist my students in learning how to recognize and self regulate their sensory processing issues. My classroom is designed to teach kids life skills, and one of the most important life skills is the ability to advocate for oneself and return to a sense of peace when feeling overwhelmed.
My classroom is in a rural title one school, and unfortunately, there has been a high turnover rate of teachers due to the difficulty of supporting these students. Because of the high teacher turnover rate, no one has been around long enough to build a sensory supportive classroom, to promote student self-regulation.
Our population is largely Latino based, with many families also being migrant workers, which means that parents are frequently out working multiple jobs to try to support their families. Because of the added stress this adds to my students, and the feeling of instability they feel at home, I want to try to create a stable loving environment within our classroom. As we know students cannot learn when their needs haven't been met. Students have to have a way to safely cope with their sensory processing difficulties. Until they learn how to and have the materials to successfully cope with their sensory processing difficulties they will not be able to learn at their full potential.
My goal is to create a place for my students to be able to escape when they are feeling unsafe and vulnerable, I have chosen a TeePee to provide this space because it will allow them to reduce their sensory input, in a manner in which they can still be safely monitored by adults. They will be able to use the other sensory materials in conjunction with the TeePee or while they work.
