We live in a small rural town nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Many of my students have never left our state, some even our county. They need to be exposed to different cultures and ways of life before going to college. By reading The Namesake, these students will gain insight into cultures, traditions, and families that they never knew existed. I also have students who will relate to Gogol's experience.
I am making it a goal to diversify my classroom library with texts that promote minority representation and broaden my students' experiences with literature and the world.
My students need texts from contemporary authors, especially authors who are women. Most of the texts that are available to them are written by voices who do not reflect our diverse society. I want to show them that they can learn from characters that they may or may not relate to. I want them to see the world from another's eyes to become more empathetic and celebrate the diversity within our world.
