Now, more than ever, children need diverse literature. My students love to read, but often struggle to identify with the stories due to the lack of diverse characters.
They need to see themselves, their families, and their cultures reflected in the stories they read. The books I selected discuss defying gender roles, show diverse families, tell the stories of children in a variety of cultures, and celebrate characters of color.
The availability of diverse literature is also a good way to expose young children to other cultures unlike their own. It opens up discussions about important topics of equality and tolerance and promotes positive attitudes toward diversity from a young age.
