I am asking for several copies of modern day texts to pair with my required text of To Kill a Mockingbird. We did not have funding this year for new books and expect the funding to continue to go down because of the tax revenue impact from the pandemic. I am envisioning a book club environment where students are given a choice of contemporary texts that deal with racism and marginalization; then, they will be working together to have honest conversations about these topics. These texts are then paired with To Kill a Mockingbird to allow for an analysis and exploration of personal bias and its impact on society. The hope is that students are spurred to action and will positively impact their community.
