I want to be as prepared as possible to teach students with a variety of learning strengths and needs as I move into this new school year. I hope to achieve this by having a wide range of different materials to help facilitate whole group and small group instruction in reading, writing, and mathematics.
Being a first-year teacher, I am starting from scratch as I collect materials to meet the needs of all my students. The materials I have chosen will not only help me teach my students, but foster a love for learning inside each of them.
Ten-frame sets, Judy clocks, and number lines are essential math tools for second graders. These materials will help students grasp mathematical concepts in a concrete and tangible way. Magentic letters are also a great tangible manipulative for students to use to help them build letter-sound associates, practice phonics skills, and work on word building strategies. TIME Magazine for kids and Scholastic News were something I loved reading as an elementary school student, and these magazines are a great way to weave science in with reading. These magazines will also help my students tremendously with our research projects we will be completing. Finally, the easel, pocket chart, and pocket chart stand will help me display charts, graphs, and notes for my whole class to see. Using these large visuals as a reference material will benefit my students as they learn new concepts.
