I want to develop a classroom library that allows my students to see themselves along with others unlike them in literature. As a new teacher I have relied mostly on hand me down materials and library checkouts for my classroom library. I have been fortunate to have some great resources there, but my students deserve a broader selection of texts.
I want to further create a classroom library where my students can see themselves as characters and heroes in both stories and history. I also hope that they can see a broader range of cultures and ethnicities portrayed, that they can build empathy and understanding for characters and heroes with different backgrounds from them. I also hope to have a few more authentic Spanish texts.
While the upcoming school year holds many uncertainties for what class will look like, I am sure to utilize a more diverse library whether teaching in my classroom or working remotely. I look forward to introducing these books during in person or video read-alouds and lessons. When it is safe to be classrooms I also look forward to using these texts for students to access during free reading time.
