These books will help my African-American students see a reflection of themselves and their problems and angst. They make the difference in my students learning by getting them to read. I have a curriculum for some of the books so my students get vocabulary and comprehension.
The Bluford series also has an audiobook section where students who struggle with reading can listen to it on audio. It has a teachers book, that you have to order separately, but it helps with time-saving. Our projects at the end are a variety of things: make your own book or trace your body and make it one of the characters from the books.
