“Dedicated to the belief that we can all do better, be better, live better. We owe our best to each and every child.” -Jewell Parker Rhodes
The Black Lives Matter movement is dedicated to fighting racism and anti-Black violence, especially in the form of police brutality. It is a movement that students want to discuss and learn more about and I feel that, as an educator, it is my job to teach these students about what is going on in the world and how to evaluate, analyze, and critically look at social justice issues. Using the novel "Ghost Boys" by Jewell Parker Rhodes, students will have an opportunity delve into the topic and to also learn about systemic racism. They will read about twelve-year-old Jerome, who is shot and killed by a police officer after he mistakes Jerome's toy gun for a real threat. As a ghost, Jerome meets Emmett Till and, together, they look at how historical racism may have led to the events that ended Jerome's life.
