In first grade students learn by concrete examples since abstract thinking is just developing. In my lessons I incorporate games and manipulatives whenever possible to help my students to grasp the concepts easier, and they do a lot of practice with writing and cutting to develop their fine motor skills. This new school year 2020 will be especially challenging for many since students will have to learn virtually for the larger portion of the week. I would like for each student to be able to use manipulatives and supplies such as scissors, crayons, pencils and notebooks (specific for learning spelling and vocabulary)at home so that they will gain the necessary understanding of the math and phonics skills to become successful. Math manipulatives are essential in helping young children to visualize and understand basic addiction and subtraction concepts, that’s why I would like to ensure that all my students have some both at school and at home.
