I make it my mission to bring the world into my classroom whenever possible. Sometimes this is in the form of movies, souveniers, photographs, etc. However, as my school division continues to stuggle with student literacy I have decided that some of the films shown in class can be changed to the books from which they were based. Therefore, this year in an effort to increase literacy, I plan to replace the movie "Everest" with the book "Into Thin Air" from which it was based.
By donating to our project, you will not only be increasing student literacy but also bringing an exciting part of the world into the classroom!
My Geology class has a unit on orogenesis (mountain building) and plate tectonics during which we discuss the formation of Everest as well as it's perils. Students always love to read first hand accounts of climbing Mt. Everest and it really brings the mountain alive to the students.
