Students all around the world have been at home learning with their family versus with their peers for the past couple of months. I will be teaching first grade, and these kids are an especially unique case, as their first year was never fully completed in person.
When we get back to school in August, my new first graders will find themselves in a very different scenario than what they were for the past couple of months. It will be a very different experience, mixed with a lot of different cultures. I want to help foster the diversity we have at a young age by reading multicultural books to them.
As of right now, we do not know whether or not we will be physically returning to the school. If we do not, and we continue our distance learning, teachers everywhere will have to get to know their kids online before they meet in person. In order to help with this process, I would love to read some of these wonderful diverse books to help each of them feel welcomed and comfortable. I strive to have each child feel appreciated and loved when they enter my classroom- whether physically or online.
The books on my list I feel have a large selection of characters from different backgrounds so that my students can relate to them. I feel this will give them a true feeling of belonging in our class.
